Shopping for the Deepavali festival in Coimbatore city this year is expected to pick up next week across sectors.
President of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, C.
Dorairaj, told The Hindu on Thursday (October 29) that several companies in Coimbatore will disburse bonuses next week.
With the festival coming in the first week of a month this year, people are likely to start purchases after getting the monthly salary and the festival bonus.
So, the last 5-6 days preceding the festival is expected to see huge retail activity.
Be it textiles, FMCG, or household appliances, the retailers are expecting good sales this year.
All the products have seen a price hike, ranging between 10% and 30%, in the last few months, depending on the product.
So, the retailers may see higher revenue though the volume of sales may remain the same as last year or slightly better in some sectors, he added.
In the case of textiles, while the large, multi brand retail outlets are already witnessing a pick up of sales, the smaller outlets are facing stiff competition from online sellers.
Further, business at the small retail shops will go up in the last few days before the festival.
Though gold and silver prices saw a decline recently, jewellery retailers are yet to see business picking up.
“We were hoping for better sales as the prices fell.
But, consumers are waiting for further fall in prices,” said B.
Sabarinath, president of the Coimbatore Jewellers Association.
The household appliances outlets are also expecting better sales only from next week.
In the case of sweets and savouries, most of the bulk buyers will purchase products for distribution just days before the festival, Mr.
Dorairaj said.
