The PM Surya Ghar Yojana is currently adding one lakh rooftop solar installations every six days, with the government expecting to accelerate the pace to the same number in four to five days within the next two to three weeks, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said.
“Today every six days we are completing 1 lakh solar rooftop installations, and I am hopeful that in another 2-3 weeks to come, it would be [done in] 4-5 days.
So, that is the speed and the scale,” Mr.
Joshi told The Hindu during a media interaction on the sidelines of the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit & Expo 2026.
He expressed confidence that the scheme would achieve its target of installing one crore rooftop solar systems by March 31, 2027, when its first phase concludes.
“The utility-led aggregation (ULA) model is also working.
Whatever the target is we would be able to complete it by March 31 – that is my confidence,” he said, adding, “[Maybe], a little here or there but I am quite confident that our target would be completed.”
The flagship residential solar programme currently has around 65.65 lakh beneficiaries and has crossed 55 lakh installations.
Meanwhile, the second phase of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM), aimed at promoting solar energy in agriculture, is awaited.
The proposed second phase is expected to have a dedicated component for agrivoltaics, which combines agricultural activity with solar power generation.
On concerns over land use, Mr.
Joshi said issues raised by other ministries, as well as those identified during consultations, would be addressed through the government’s ongoing inter-ministerial discussions.
